Slimming pills may cause liver damage
September 19, 2005
The UK health department has issued fresh warnings about Chinese
traditional medicines for slimming. These unlicensed medicines
contain toxic herbal ingredients which can result in bodily
damage.
Earlier, a British man suffered liver damage after using
a slimming product called Shubao. A banned herb called Aristolochia
is found in many slimming herbs which can cause kidney failures.
Sibutramine and Methylphenidate in weight loss medications
also raises blood pressure. The UK Medicines and Healthcare
Products Regulatory Agency confirmed that some widely available
Chinese products are of low quality and it does not meet
the manufacturing standards set by the Health department.
These products are advertised as safe and hazardous ingredients
may not be mentioned on the label.
