New anti Obesity Drug on the anvil
gets mixed response
September 1, 2005
The novel anti-obesity drug Acomplia weighed on shares
as a French group reported mixed response to the drug along
with other such drugs in its pipeline. The weight loss medication
also helps people quit smoking.
Acomplia is expected to reach the market in 2006 and some
analysts see it as a $3billion a year seller. Worries over
the commercial potential and competition issues can leave
doubts over the future growth at the company which also
faces patent challenges to key drugs. The US centers for
Medicare and Medicare services recently stated that it would
not pay for obesity drugs and this came as a big blow to
Acomplia.
