The obese people are very excited for the weight loss operations. Now a day these operations are at a record demand. But doctors say that these operations are not an instant fix.
Professor Simon Dexter, an upper-gastrointestinal surgeon at Leeds Royal Infirmary, says that he often has to correct problems with bariatric surgeries that have gone wrong. “People go to Belgium because it is cheaper, but there is no aftercare. What some fail to understand is that obesity is a chronic disease needing lifelong treatment, not a one-off operation.”
David Ashton, medical director of the Healthier Weight Centres in London, Birmingham and Manchester, where bariatric operations are performed, says that success is supported by a three-pronged approach. “The band must be put in properly. Then patients need expert support for its adjustment. Finally, the patient must understand that this is not a cure but a tool: if they abuse it, it will fail, if they work with it, they will have a good chance of success.”
Recently a Swiss study pointed out that the rate of failure of laparoscopic gastric banding is 40 percent. In the study it is found out that most of the weight loss operation has a failure rate but even after that the obesity experts think that it is better to have a weight loss operation than to have obesity.
