Side effect by weight loss surgery
June 12, 2006
According to new research presented at 66th Scientific
Session of American Diabetes Association (ADA) the Bariatric
weight loss surgery may affect bone health after some times.
The main effect of weight loss surgery is found by Robert Considine, PHD assistant professor with its associates and examined that it effect on serum makers of bone. He said the long term effect of weight loss surgery must be investigated.
At baseline and at 6 months after surgery, the researchers measured levels of serum osteocalcin, bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BAP), and N-telopeptide cross-linked collagen type 1 (NTX), which are indicative of bone resorption
The bariatric surgery increased to 3.5 from 2.4 per 100,000
in USA from 1996 to 2002. After 6 months of surgery the
level of serum osteocalcin(6.87 vs 10.87 ng/mL; P < .0001),
BAP (14.16 vs 16.43 ng/mL; P = .04) and NTX (10.91 vs 19.62
nM/BCE; P < .0001) measured by researchers, which are indicative
of bone resorption. However circulating level of calcium
and phosphate remains unchanged after surgery.
The researcher will measured serum bone maker again after
1 year for future studies.
