January 17, 2006
China has got its first weight loss surgery training and
treatment center in Shanghai. The obesity center is the
first one in the Asia Pacific region as well. It’s
brought a big ray of hope for millions of Chinese as 39
of them are seriously obese. Zheng Chengzhu, director of
the center, said at the center's inauguration on Monday
that the hospital would introduce the gastric banding method
to create a small pouch in the upper part of the stomach
to limit food intake for obese people.
Gastric banding is one of the simplest and safest obesity
surgery methods. It can lead to a 30 to 40 percent weight
loss within a year after the operation, and 50 to 60 percent
after three years. This surgery would help patients avoid
weight-rebound and have no side effects for the stomach.
Apart from weight loss surgeries, diet pills are also a viable option for combating obesity. Phentermine, one of the most popular diet pills throughout the world has helped millions of men and women in their weight loss endeavor.
