Phentermine

Phentermine is a sympathomimetic amine. It stimulates the central nervous system leading to an increase in heart rate and blood pressure and decrease in appetite. Since its generic, Phentermine is typically less expensive than Adipex-P and Ionamin. Dry mouth, constipation, irritability, stomach upset and sleeplessness are the main side effects of Phentermine .

Phentermine Dosage

• If the patient does not understand the Phentermine directions, ask the pharmacist, nurse or doctor to explain it
• Taking Phentermine in the evening causes insomnia
• Never take more of this medication than is prescribed
• Do not crush or chew the drug

• Diarrhea
• Impotence
• Habit forming

Phentermine Drug Precautions

Use caution when driving or operating machinery after taking Phentermine. It may cause blurred vision, dizziness or restlessness. Do not take Phentermine late in the day as a dose which is taken too late can cause insomnia.

Drug Interactions

• You cannot take Phentermine if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) in the last 14 days.
• Phentermine may reduce the effects of guanethidine (Ismelin). This could lead to an increase in blood pressure.
• Before taking this medication, tell doctor if the patient is taking a tricyclic antidepressant such as amitriptyline (Elavil), amoxapine (Asendin), doxepin (Sinequan), nortriptyline (Pamelor), imipramine (Tofranil), clomipramine (Anafranil), protriptyline (Vivactil), or desipramine (Norpramin). These drugs may decrease the effects of phentermine.

Note:

Phentermine is habit forming. The individual can become physically and psychologically dependent on this medication and withdrawal effects may occur if the medication is stopped suddenly after several weeks of continuous use. Talk to the medical practitioner on stopping the medication gradually. Seek emergency medical attention if there has been an overdose. Symptoms of a Phentermine overdose include restlessness, tremor, rapid breathing, confusion, hallucinations, panic, aggressiveness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, an irregular heartbeat and seizures.
