Obesity and Soft drink consumption

It is not difficult to notice how the technological advances in production and increased product availability have increased the consumption of soft drinks in recent times. But what is perhaps more difficult is to realize the strong co-relation between excessive intake of soft drinks and undesirable consequences of the same on the health of innumerable individuals all over the globe today.

Obesity, in particular, is a serious health threat plaguing many people and is especially a critical concern for the health of children and adolescents, at large. Genetics, inadequate exercise, mismanaged lifestyle, and poor dietary habits are some of the reasons leading to this disorder. However, health researches are now showing that soft drink consumption is yet another prominent factor leading to obesity.

Recent studies have demonstrated that regular and prolonged consumption of soft drinks have adverse affects on our health. Official Dietary Guides recommend that sweetener intake should not exceed the difference between a person's energy needs and the amount of food, without sugar, that supplies the body's minimal energy levels. However, regular soft drinks are made of 7 to 14% added sweeteners that constitute a significant portion of added sweetener in children and adolescent's diets. This increased level of sweetener increases our caloric intake and is a contributory factor in the obesity. To avoid get rid of obesity some people start taking diet pills, but before taking any kind of diet pills whether it is Phentermine or Xenical they should consult doctor.

As the result on ongoing research into the subject, we now know that there is a strong relation between the Body Mass Index (BMI) and obesity for each unit of excessive sugar sweetened drink consumed. These studies, although experimental only prove that consumption of sugar sweetened drinks could lead to obesity because of inaccurate and incomplete compensation for energy consumed in liquid form.

There are some genetic disorders that we can not too do much about except control and monitor but obesity is a disturbing trend today that we can sit up and take notice of. A healthy lifestyle and a balanced diet, specifically one that does not include excessive consumptions of soft drinks, can do much in battling this menace. It is time we read the writing on wall and join efforts in restricting soft drink consumption and enforcing healthy diet practices.
